The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)seeks an Athletics Media Assistant. This is a 10-month appointment for the 2026-27 academic year with approximately a $2,000 per month salary. The position assists the Associate Athletic Director for Communications in promoting UAB’s intercollegiate sports programs. Serves as the primary contact for volleyball, softball and bowling (some travel included).
Designs, writes and produces media guides, news releases and other printed material. Compiles and reports official NCAA statistics and acts as liaison to the American Athletic Conference office. Nominates student-athletes for national, regional and conference honors. Coordinates media operations for home events; assists with special events when necessary. Contributes to the maintenance of the official athletics website (uabsports.com). Handles the day-to-day maintenance of UAB’s Athletics and sport-specific official social media channels.
This position is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or current graduate students seeking hands-on Division I athletics communications experience while serving as the primary communications contact for three varsity sports.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, sport management or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
Willingness to work evenings, weekends and travel with assigned sports as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in NCAA athletics communications, sports information or a related field (graduate assistantships and internships considered).
Some Experience writing press releases, feature stories and game recaps in AP Style.
Some Experience maintaining athletic websites using a content management system (SIDEARM or similar preferred).
Some Experience managing social media accounts for an athletic department, team or organization.
Familiarity with NCAA Live Stats/StatCrew, NCAA Genius or other collegiate statistics software.
Experience producing media guides, game notes, record books or other publications using Adobe InDesign.
Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly Photoshop and InDesign.
Experience with photography workflows and basic photo editing.
Familiarity with video workflows and basic editing in Adobe Premiere Pro or similar software.
Understanding of NCAA and conference media relations procedures and awards nomination processes.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with coaches, student-athletes and external media.
