Position Focus:
The Sr. Associate/Associate Director of Athletics for Strategic Communications is responsible for leading the development of strategic communications and elevating the profile of the Yale athletic department.
Essential Duties
1. Develop and execute communications strategies across all aspects of the department of athletics. Ensure all communication strategies and execution fit within the broader context of the University-wide communications strategy and plan. 2. Responsible for developing a consistent internal and external brand messaging strategy that is reflected in all communications on behalf of Yale Athletics. 3. Partner with Director of Athletics and members of the senior staff on sensitive information needing press releases and crisis communication 4. Manage the administration of the athletics web site, developing of a proactive plan for website content and its on-going development. 5. Coordinate all media requests; ensure timely press releases and press conferences providing accurate information to our media partners inclusive of daily and weekly strategic communications for select sports. 6. Enhance partnerships by cultivating relationships with campus, local, regional, and national communications professionals to collaboratively tell the Yale athletics story. 7. Maximize the number of positive media hits and minimize potentially negative communications with respect to athletics. 8. Responsible for the strategy and presentation of all media related materials. 9. Serve as the lead contact for the Ivy League and ECAC Hockey for assigned sports; serve as the primary contact for a select number of varsity teams. 10. Responsible for providing appropriate guidance to coaches, student-athletes and staff members regarding media inquiries. 11. Supervise exempt staff. Responsible for the job evaluation, development and continued professional growth of direct reports. 12. Scheduling appropriate staffing for home and away games. 13. Other duties as assigned by the senior administration.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelors Degree and 4 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrated ability working within an athletic department or conference office at the collegiate level, or a similar industry, with a focus on sports information and video and graphic elements from concept to creation.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Outstanding communication, organizational, interpersonal and written skills.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Demonstrated ability managing social media platforms, web and graphic design. Ability to work on deadline and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Strong working knowledge of relevant computer programs, e.g. Excel, Word, Adobe Creative Suite, website CMS platforms.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Ability to travel as well as night and weekend work.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Master's degree in related field.
