SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Associate Athletic Director for Communications, the Athletic Communications Coordinator provides public/media relations services to all Gallaudet University athletic teams and student-athletes with the goal of promoting the Bison successes on and off the field of competition.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
I. Provides athletic communication services to all Gallaudet athletics programs by attending Bison athletic events, writing stories, posting social media posts, designing graphics, and working with media, coaching staffs and opponent’s coaches and staffs.
II. Coordinates production and dissemination of statistics immediately following each game; and supervises individuals involved in this process; reports information to the media, NCAA and others for each of the University’s NCAA Division III varsity intercollegiate sports.
III. Designs social media graphics that can help recognize the accomplishments of Gallaudet student-athletes, coaches and staff.
IV. Films and edits video clips that can be used on social media and websites to promote fan attendance to home events/games/meets.
V. Works with coaching staff on social media and videos that can help with recruiting and retention.
VI. Supervises and schedules graduate assistants, intern(s) and student workers to attend home events and work on projects and other tasks as needed; and teaches and contributes to their learning about the athletic communications office, the roles, and responsibilities.
VII. Serves an active member among the athletic conference and nominates Bison student-athletes for weekly and end of the season awards, sharing stats and other information with conferences.
VIII. Maintains thorough athletic record-keeping of Gallaudet athletic history while updating the athletic archive and researching Bison athletic history.
IX. Organizes media/photo days for each University sport; and supervises the photographer, including editing of photographs that will be posted on the athletic website or within athletic publications.
X. Organizes Gallaudet athletics live video archives and helps to share video broadcasts with coaches postgame.
XI. Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor.
XII. Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
XIII. Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
XIV. Performs related and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree.
- A minimum three years of professional experience in communications, media relations, video/photography, social media or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree
- Experience working in professional or collegiate athletics in a higher education institution.
- Fluency in American Sign Language.

- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.

- Strong knowledge of higher education and areas of athletics, communications and marketing.
- Strong knowledge of NCAA rules and compliance issues as they pertain to publicity and promotional efforts.
- Strong knowledge of the principles and practices of writing, editing and publishing press releases.
- Strong knowledge of best practices in social media and being able to represent the University in a professional manner on digital platforms.
- Strong ability to interact effectively with student-athletes, colleagues, coaches, and supporters.
- Strong knowledge of and/or experience working within Microsoft Office, social media platforms, statistical programs like StatCrew and NCAA’s NLS, and CRM/CMS tools such as PrestoSports, SIDEARM Sports, etc.
- Demonstrated experience broadcasting live events/games and video editing knowledge.
- Demonstrated experience with writing, creating visual and/or multimedia assets, and/or filming for digital audiences.
- Demonstrated skills, knowledge and aptitude in scoring athletic games and knowing the rules of the sports Gallaudet sponsors.
- Demonstrated experience in creating visual and multimedia assets and filming for digital audiences.
- Demonstrated experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro or other NLEs, After Effects, InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop), social video production tools, graphic design tools, and video cameras desired.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
- Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
- The incumbent must be able to work in outdoor conditions, to work at nights, weekends and holidays depending on the athletics’ schedule.
Other Important Information
- The incumbent must be able to lift objects upwards of 25 pounds.
- The incumbent may need to travel with teams during the week, weekend, and holidays depending on the need for athletic communications support.
- If the incumbent has no knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is required to achieve an ASLPI score of 1.5 within two years of employment. If the incumbent is hired with some knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is required to achieve an ASLPI score of 2 within two years of employment. The supervisor must ensure that the incumbent receives the necessary support to meet this goal.
- All employees are expected to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and Influenza (flu). They also will be required to submit their vaccination record within the first week of employment. If they cannot be fully vaccinated, they may apply for a medical or religious exemption.
- The successful candidate will undergo a background check that must be cleared prior to working at Gallaudet University.
